Tips for Winter Lawn Care

Just because your lawn will soon be covered in snow doesn’t mean the winter is time stop caring for it. Instead, winter is an important time to take care of some much needed lawn maintenance. Before you let your lawn hibernate for the winter follow these tips to make sure your spring is nice and green.

Cut Your Lawn Short

As you get your last mowing session in before the snow starts to fall, decrease the height of your mower. New lawn growth is more susceptible to disease over the long winter. Also, it is more likely to dry out which will lead that brown appearance no one likes to see.

Fertilize one More Time

Just like a hibernating bear, your lawn needs nutrients to stay alive during the winter months, and to devour when spring rolls around. One last fertilization, ideally in the late fall, will allow your grass to store up and prepare for when sun shines on it once again.

Clean up Your Yard

After summer storms and countless barbecues, your yard is sure to have some debris scattered around it. Be sure to remove these objects, and not just because you won’t see them for months. While being weighed down by snow, things like lawn chairs or branches can damage your lawn and suffocate your grass.

Prepare for Spring

Instead of waiting for warm weather to start thinking about your lawn again, use the winter downtime to plan out what you want to do with your lawn in the spring.
