Consumer Protection from Identity Theft

Once someone’s identity is stolen and used, it can take a lot of time and energy to clear their name and essentially reclaim their identify.   Identity thieves use identities to buy cars, houses and services.  It is possible for identity thieves to commit crimes under someone’s name.    There are things a consumer can do to protect themselves.

Mailboxes are an identity thieves’ dream.  If possible, use a mailbox that locks or even better get a post office box for the mail to be delivered to.

Getting credit cards with pictures can deter a thief from using a current card.  It can not deter them from starting a new account with a stolen identity.  It is also wise to cancel any credit cards not being used.  An open line of credit is very attractive to an identity thief.

Do not put a social security number or a phone number on checks.  Checks are not always disposed of properly unfortunately.  If an identity thief has access to checks it is best the checks have as little information as possible on them.

Do not throw away anything that could be used to become another person.  A personal shredder is a must for consumer protection in today’s world.  Any document with any personal information should be shredded.  Shred credit card receipts, pre approved credit offers, old credit card statements etc.

Do not carry social security cards, birth certificates or passports unless they are needed immediately.  These are easy items to lose and finding them is like striking gold to an identity thief.

Do not use the same passwords for all accounts.  This is very tempting to do as there are passwords for everything today and trying to remember all of them can be rather difficult.  When asked to create a password use something totally original that only the account owner would know.  Not something simple like a mother’s maiden name.
